The Parts We Give - Songcycle World Premiere
An "oasis for the soul" and "delicately raw" as it is intricately crafted with moving textures - ABC
Christine Pan’s music [...] reminiscent of John Adams met a fearlessness to fully explore the colours - Limelight
Christine Pan is all about people and the human condition, how we behave in certain ways and what drives us. - Musica Viva AU
Step into the sonic future with the world premiere of The Parts We Give, a bold new hyperpop song-cycle by Australian-Chinese composer Christine Pan. This genre-blending, high-voltage performance rips apart the seams of classical tradition and stitches them back together with glitchy synths, distorted vocals, and raw emotional power.
Didi and Jiejie exist in a space between memory and simulation—two siblings chasing echoes of a life they’re only beginning to understand. As they reconstruct a shared past shaped by sacrifice, care, and cultural pressure, they begin to question what was chosen, what was inherited, and what was ever truly theirs.
Soprano Megan Kim (Queensland Opera’s Young Artist 2025) brings crystalline fragility to Jiejie, while Tenor Wesley Yu (finalist in the 2025 Nicholas Tarling Aria Competition) delivers a fiercely intimate portrait of Didi. Their voices drive a story that flickers between past and present, between the spaces of what’s real and unreal.
The Parts We Give is part concert, part transmission from another dimension. This one-hour concert reshapes the rules of music theatre, fusing opera and hyperpop into something radically new. Be the first to witness this genre-defying work at East Sydney Community and Arts Centre.
